Flight Attendant


The major concern of the flight attendant previously addressed as stewardesses and stewards is passenger safety and flight deck’s security. To make passengers comfortable in the air is also the responsibility of the flight attendant. In emergencies maintaining safety, keeping passengers calm. To serve snacks, beverages, meals, etc. is the additional duty of the flight attendant.

Duties & Responsibilities

1.To scrutinize all safety conditions and emergency equipment of aircraft either on the ground or in flight.

2. Demonstrate all safety equipment and verify that passengers are following safety signs and procedures.

3. Grant hospitality and customer service to passengers.

4. Welcome passengers while boarding, monitor carry-on baggage, and guide passengers to the assigned seats.

5. Unaccompanied minors, individuals with a disability, and the elderly are taken care of throughout aircraft operations

6. Tackle onboard medical situations

After completing your formal training, you will be placed on reserve status. It means that you will only work when called upon. To fill in for absent or vacationing employees, the flight attendants are called. You can be adjusted on extra flights. Reserve status of you may extend for at least one year to seven years depending on the availability of staff. Finally, you are allowed to bid on monthly assignments.

A. Candidates must successfully complete a 10-year background check

2. Age:

A. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), flight attendants should be at least 18 years old.

B. Some employers prefer a higher minimum age.

C. Some airlines opt to hire job candidates who have experience working with the public.

3. Physical requirements:

A. Employers will require height requirement of between 5’0 and 5’11 (without shoes).

B. Your vision should be correctable 20/40 or better.

C. You must maintain good physical fitness.

D. You must practice good grooming, hygiene, and etiquette.

4. Training:

A. All newly selected flight attendants are granted three to six weeks of on-the-job training

from their employers.

B. After successfully completing an employer’s initial training program, flight attendants are required to get certification from the FAA.

C. Flying on other types of aircraft requires additional training and certification. Competencies & Capabilities

Job Prospects

The job prospects for flight attendants for the next ten years comparative to other occupations and industries are higher than all other occupations. Larger aircraft that can carry more passengers are increasing in number, therefore, require more flight attendants. Jobs as a flight attendant are expected to grow by about 10% over the next 10 years. It is the fastest growth projected for all occupations between 2016 and 2026. Growth for other aviation transportation employees is projected to be 7% over the next 10 years. The number of able employees available to the number of job opportunities is very competitive

Work Environment

Being representatives of the airline, flight attendants must be in a well-groomed and professional

manner. Tattoos and body piercings should not be visible. Tattoos on any areas of the hand, fingers,

wrists, neck, and head are not permissible.

Work Schedule

Flight attendants should be well prepared to work nights, weekends and holidays. Fresh flight attendants may need to be on call and ready to work on short notice. Flight attendants often spend between 75 to 100 hours in flight each month, in addition to it, the flight attendant spends about 50 hours on the ground. During the ground hours, they prepare for flights and perform other duties. If the flight route is abroad, some flight attendants may be away from home for several days each week.

A. A freshly appointed Flight Attendant with less than 1-year experience can earn ₹373,380 based on 38 salaries.
